Best Buy Selects MicroMain for Maintenance Management Software
(September 9, 2003) AUSTIN, TX — MicroMain Corporation, a leading provider of asset and facility management software and services, today announced that Best Buy Co., Inc. has selected MicroMain‘s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for maintenance management at its Richfield, Minn., corporate campus.
North America’s leading specialty retailer of consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software and appliances, Best Buy is utilizing MicroMain XM™, MicroMain’s comprehensive CMMS. Best Buy is also using add-on software modules msATRAK™ for asset tracking and msMOBILE™ for PDA-based work orders and inspections.
"After evaluating three vendors over the course of six months, we chose MicroMain XM because it is extremely user-friendly," said David Roper, Corporate Facility Manager with Best Buy. "We also appreciated its ease in implementation.
"MicroMain has done an excellent job in training us on the system," he added. "The step-by-step training on using msMOBILE was especially helpful for our engineers, who are already very comfortable inputting data and using the system."
Best Buy is using MicroMain’s software to track the preventive and predictive maintenance of equipment at its new corporate headquarters facility, which was completed this spring. The corporate campus encompasses 1.5 million square feet of office space, plus a large parking ramp. The company currently has more than 2,500 pieces of equipment in its MicroMain XM database, and anticipates adding another 500 by the end of the year.
When Best Buy began inventorying its equipment at the new corporate campus, it used msATRAK software to record the information, link it to a barcode, and set the correct parent-child asset relationship, which means one equipment unit is a component or subset of a larger equipment unit. After barcoding the assets, the company was able to use msMOBILE software to download the work orders directly to the engineers’ handheld computers. Using msMOBILE, the engineers pick up their handhelds, see the work orders, complete the work, and upload the information back to the database at the end of their shift.
"We’re using the MicroMain XM suite to make sure our equipment is performing at optimal effectiveness and to make sure we are providing a safe, comfortable environment for our 5,000 corporate employees," Roper said. "At the same time we are tracking how much time and material we spend on each piece of equipment and we’re tracking maintenance to be sure it’s performed correctly and in a timely manner in order to contribute to the efficiency of the organization."
"We are pleased to welcome Best Buy to our growing list of retail customers," said Pat Conroy, President of MicroMain Corporation. "Fortune 500 companies such as Best Buy are realizing that maintenance management can have a positive impact in extending equipment life and saving money. With the MicroMain XM software suite, Best Buy can be assured that its investment in equipment and the new facility will be protected."
