Austin – Enjoy the City!

Top Attractions

MUSIC:  On any given night, live music plays at more than 100 venues throughout the city, making Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Austin is also home to Grammy Award-winning musicians The Dixie Chicks, Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.

SILICON HILLS:  One of the country’s top technology cities, Austin is headquarters for Dell Computer Corporation and major operations for IBM, Samsung, Motorola, and Advanced Micro Devices.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS:  Located just north of downtown, UT is the largest public university in the U.S. with more than 50,000 students.  Hook ‘em Horns!

A LITTLE BATTY:  Austin is home to North America’s largest urban bat population, with up to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats roosting under the Congress Ave. Bridge from March through October.

FILM:  The Alamo, Spy Kids 3D, Miss Congeniality, The Rookie and Second Hand Lions were filmed in and around Austin, the top location for moviemaking in Texas.

STATE CAPITAL:  Austin is home to the State Capitol of Texas, built 1882-88 of “Sunset Red” granite and measuring 302 feet high—14 feet higher than the nation’s capitol in Washington, D.C.

NATURAL BEAUTY:  Recreational opportunities abound nearly 75 miles of hike-and-bike trails; more than 200 city parks, including 360-acre Zilker Park; and three major lakes—Lake Travis, Lake Austin and Town Lake (which is in the center of downtown).

CULTURE:  The downtown area offers almost 20 museums and more than 50 galleries; fine dining and casual eateries; three National Register Historical Districts; historic and contemporary theatre; weekly festivals; nightlife; shopping; and unique Austin fun such as Austin City Limits, quirky downtown characters, and free Dillo transportation around downtown.
